ST. CLOUD – Two people, suspected of being professional couriers used by drug traffickers, have been charged after a traffic stop on Interstate 94 near Clearwater.
According to charges in Stearns County District Court, 44 Ana Pacheco Rivera and 52 years old Gabriel Sandoval were caught with 70 pounds of methamphetamine on Tuesday.
A Minnesota State Patrol trooper was told the two men were from Oregon and had been traveling for several days shopping at the Mall of America. Court records show there was no visible luggage, only two dogs in the back seat.
During the conversation, the soldier learned that Pacheco-Rivera had lied about the vehicle registration and that a drug-sniffing dog had been brought in to help him.
Records show the car had a hidden compartment containing 70 one-pound bags of methamphetamine worth more than $400,000.
As research continued, evidence revealed several different names for the two.
Both suspects have been remanded to Stearns County Jail where they are awaiting their first court appearance.
