The use of video and audio for real-time engagement in HR applications is exploding. What this means for HR managers.
The COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting hybrid working model are fueling an explosive growth in HR applications that feature video and audio. According to a recent study by Agora, a provider of real-time engagement solutions, real-time engagement video in HR applications increased by 4,120% compared to 2020 and RTE audio increased by 1 404% last year.
“RTE’s video and audio have been essential for HR, as well as others amid the pandemic,” said Tony Zhao, founder and CEO of Agora, in a press release. “These technologies are at the center of the digital transformation and will continue to be cornerstones today and into the future. “
What this means for HR managers
The RTE functionality which includes video and audio is no longer an attractive option; it’s a necessity within HR platforms and departments, Zhao says. He adds that the demand for these experiences will continue well in the future for employee engagement and communication.
Agora’s analysis does not include Zoom or Microsoft teams or other web conferencing tools, he says. However, it does include any app that uses Agora’s API development tools to integrate real-time engagement functionality directly into the app. This could mean, for example, employee engagement materials that HR disseminates to an organization’s workforce.
As video and audio continue to grow and appear in business tools, employees will expect these features in their HR applications, Zhao explains.

“More and more employees expect RTE functionality in the HR departments and in the workplace they use, especially as the world is adopting a hybrid work model,” he says. “They want live interactive features like real-time messaging, voice chat, video chat, whiteboards, screen sharing, document sharing and more.”
He adds that video and audio will lead to what Zhao calls a “seamless” integration that optimizes employee resource sharing and promotes team productivity. Video and audio can also help HR managers create apps that click more strongly with the workforce than traditional apps with static graphics and text.
According to Zhao, “We are seeing a paradigm shift in the types of features and functionality (that) end users expect from their applications. Developers must adapt to deliver the desired RTE experiences.
