Loughborough University and the Laurus Trust are joining forces in a new initiative to support the sports stars of tomorrow.
The university has partnered with the multi-academy trust, which has the excellent Cheadle Hulme High School in Stockport as a founding school, to come up with its ‘ELITE path’.
The all-new, ambitious program will provide selected students with the potential to participate in sport on a professional level with the invaluable experience of living, training and learning like a professional athlete.
Up to 60 students from the five Laurus Trust high schools will be selected to work with some of the best clubs and coaches in the sport in tailored mentoring and coaching sessions at the university.
Loughborough will offer talented young people personal training, strength and conditioning training, tailor-made prehab and rehabilitation sessions, video analysis and links with nutritionists, psychologists and physiotherapists.
Commenting on the partnership, Dr Ash Casey, Head of Business Theme for Participation in the School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences and Academic Lead for this project, said: âThis partnership presents a fantastic opportunity to work with young people, their teachers, and their schools to improve what is happening in their education.
âWhen the Laurus Trust first approached us about a partnership, it was evident that they placed learning, personal development and supporting their students at the heart of what they did.
“This reflects the philosophy of the university, and this long-term partnership allows us to take what we do best – which is sport – and use it to empower Laurus individuals to excel. . “
Ed Haslam, Director of Sports Excellence at Laurus Trust, added: âWe are extremely excited to launch the ELITE course to ensure that every student has access to a comprehensive, educational sports experience.
“Our principles align very well with those of Loughborough University, and we are delighted to have them on board to help support the training and education of our student-athletes.”
To be considered for the ELITE course, potential students must meet strict criteria. They must play at the regional or national level, devote a significant number of hours per week to their training, and have the ambition to play at a professional level with the potential to be accepted on an international or Olympic path.
