Bangalore: With the uncertainty of the labor market and the evolution of the skills required to perform certain tasks with the transfer from work to home, a survey found that there was a growth of 200% per year in the number of professionals opting for refresher and retraining courses. on the Intellipat platform from 2019 to 2021.
Intellipaat, an online vocational training and certification platform, surveyed participants aged 24 to 38. Five hundred people participated in the six-month survey.
According to the survey, 70% of participants opted for data science and AI courses and reported a 60% increase in their salary and position. Other top courses chosen by professionals were Data Science and AI, Cloud, Programming, and Analytics.
The platform conducted another survey during the period from April 2020 to April 2021 with an estimated sample size of 80,000 people. In it, they found that 90% upgrade with digital marketing courses and 70% opt for web development courses.
Diwakar Chittora, founder and CEO of Intellipaat, told TOI that one in four employees in India have lost their jobs as a result of the pandemic, and the job market is still in decline. He says the only way to survive the crisis is to upgrade, which is as important for companies as it is for employees. “Skills upgrading is necessary to keep the former group ahead of the competition, while it helps the latter group to stand out in the workplace. Furthermore, improving skills is more than just improving skills; it also improves resistance to threats and challenges in a highly volatile market following the Covid-19 pandemic. ”
He added that the cost of the courses is from 20,000 to 80,000 depending on the duration and university selection. “After completing these courses, you will be able to increase employee engagement and retention, attract top talent, improve collaboration between departments, accelerate adaptation to change, and strengthen brand and reputation throughout your organization, ”Chittora said, adding that Cybersecurity, Application Development, Web Development and Product Management are some of the promising courses that are in high demand right now.
Vikas Gupta, managing director of Wiley, WileyNXT and mthree (India) said that apart from the disruption caused by the pandemic, other reasons for the increase in skills are as follows: “Up to 40% of estimated needs in Indian labor force of 5 million people. requalification over the next five years to keep pace with automation and changing skills needs in various industries. An individual is expected to improve their skills six times during their career to align with the business market innovation and growth strategy.
“Organizations need a strategic plan to provide the right skills to their existing employees and acquire new people with the right skills to fill the gaps. All of these factors have contributed to the increased demand for skills, development and professional learning in India amid the Covid-19 pandemic, ”he added.
When asked about the reason for the popularity of data science and AI, cloud, programming and analytics courses, Gupta said that the evolution of Industry 4.0 to Industry 4.1 is a factor.
“However, there is a global tech skills shortage crisis, with jobs on the rise and not enough qualified candidates to fill them, resulting in unemployment. A credible industry report estimates that digitally skilled workers make up only 12% of India’s workforce, and the number of employees requiring digital skills is expected to increase nine-fold by 2025. As a result , there is a growing need and demand for programs and courses focused on emerging technologies such as AI, ML, analytics, cloud computing, etc., which help to bridge the technology skills gap that prevails in the world. country. ”
He added that the most requested WileyNXT courses were those that focused on AI and ML applications. “WileyNXT’s ‘Digital Transformation’ & ‘Data-Driven Product Management’ program has also seen an encouraging response from the market,” he added.
