CNN no longer counts on Sunday nights for ratings growth

Since the Warner Bros.-Discovery merger was finalized earlier this year, there have been numerous restructurings and downsizings across the company, including at CNN.

End of October, Chris Licht, CEO of CNN announced that their “long-term plan will no longer be based on projects commissioned with external partners”.

A reduction in original projects is a U-turn from the programming strategy of the last decade implemented by the old ones CNN President Jeff Zucker. Among their past notable original programs were the documentaries black fish (2013), and John Lewis: good problem (2020) and series like Anthony Bourdain: parts unknown and United Shades of America.

Sunday nights have been a destination for most of these original shows, including recent runs of the seven-part docuseries The Murdochs: Empire of Influencee and the second season of Stanley Tucci: in search of Italiany.

The Murdochswhich premiered September 25 and ended October 30, averaged 428,000 total viewers, including 72,000 in the key 25-54 demographic for its seven original TV shows, according to Live plus data. Same Day by Nielsen Media Research.

Fox News Channel, the channel run by the Murdoch family, was even more watched than the documentary. Competing programs of the FNC during this period in the same slots Murdoch had been broadcast, which included The next revolution and The big midterm show as well as a rerun of their Sunday show in the early evening Sunday night in Americaattracted 953,000 total viewers and 107,000 adults aged 25-54.

Six-part documentary about CNN’s Princess Diana Diana from a year ago (Oct 10-Nov 14, 2021) also exceeded Murdoch; it drew 764,000 viewers and 129,000 adults aged 25-54. Both Diana (+35%) and Murdoch (+29%, through Oct. 23) achieved similar percentage increases in live viewership + seven days, via DVR and on-demand platforms.

Stanley Tucci: In Search of Italy is one of CNN’s most popular shows and stepped in as the network’s global tourism show after the abrupt end of Unknown parts following the death of Anthony Bourdain. Its inaugural season was a ratings success: original shows averaged 1.45 million viewers and 309,000 adults aged 25 to 54 from February 14 to March 14. 21, 2021.

Its current second season has not been as powerful, although it is doing better than its Murdoch launch: May 1 to October 30, 758,000 viewers including 137,000 adults aged 25-54 – down 48% and 56%, respectively.

The cause of these declines has to do with the network itself and the various surrounding news cycles. The winter and early spring of 2021 featured some of CNN’s most-watched weeks in its history, with the Capitol uprising, Biden’s inauguration, Trump’s second impeachment trial and the midpoint of the COVID pandemic during the implementation of the first vaccines. During that brief period, CNN had ruled all of cable.

But now, despite preparing for the 2022 midterm elections, CNN hasn’t garnered as much interest (as the weekly averages listed below indicate) and, for a time, has relegated to third place. total cable news status. viewers and a distant Fox News finalist in adults 25-54.

A little non-negative CNN tidbit: Since returning for his recent episode that aired Oct. 9, In search of Italy relatively matched its slot competitor, FNC The next revolution based on adults 25-54 (Sunday Oct 9-30: Italy 115,000, Revolution 114,000).

Nonetheless, FNC’s Sunday 9 p.m. show easily beat Tucci in Live + Same Day viewership (1.19 million vs. 663,000).

By the way, taking into account the figures of Live+7 for Stanley Tucci: In Search of Italyits total viewership jumped dramatically by 73% to 1.16 million per episode, as of October 23.

NewsNation reached ratings milestones during the week ending October 30. The fledgling medium surpassed the 100,000 prime-time average viewers mark, all thanks to its most-watched exclusive event in its brief history: the U.S. Senate debate in Pennsylvania between Democratic incumbent John Fetterman and challenger Republican and former daytime talk show host Dr. Mehmet Oz starting Tuesday, Oct. 25 (numbers listed in the rankings below). The post-debate analysis took place on Cuomobringing the already No. 1 show on the network to its highest viewership yet, with 214,000 viewers.
